These babies were born in unusual, unexpected, or even surprising circumstances. Sometimes, they were not even expected by their parents.
Recent months saw a surprise in the lives of one infant. In a “cryptic”, unplanned pregnancy, a 10-year old helped her mom to give birth at home. Several babies could not wait until their due dates for unexpected entries in surprising places.

1. A college student graduated and gave birth — on the same day
Dillard University student who is pregnant Jada Sayles’ learned that her May 14 graduation ceremony would be taking place on her due date, she didn’t take the coincidence too seriously — until her contractions.

Sayles accepted recently a job as a Texas care coordinator for ex-criminals. She plans to attend Tulane University online in spring 2019 to obtain her master’s degree in public administration.
Sayles claims that Easton, who is now seven months old, is the “happiest baby”. “He’s always laughing and smiling,” she says. “He can sit up now and he’s starting to crawl, although it’s backwards! He is my best friend.
2. A mom delivered her own baby on the side of the road — with her five other kids in the car
Heather Skaats from Kentucky was driving with her five children, when labor began three weeks earlier than expected.
“I was having light contractions before we left, so I figured I had time to run an errand,” Skaats told TODAY.com in May.
Eventually, Skaats was forced to stop and deliver her baby on the side of the road — not the home water birth she had envisioned.
“I pulled over — assured the kids that everything was OK — and then I grabbed my phone and got out of the van,” Skaats said.
Before her water broke, she squatted.
“I put my hand down there and his head started coming out with his body,” she said. “I didn’t even have to push. It was so fast. I was on the phone with my husband, Nick, and 20 seconds later, I was like, ‘He’s here!'”
Skaats wrapped her baby in a blanket to keep him close as she drove home.
She said, “I believe the children were in shock.” “They were quite quiet.”
Skaats met with her midwife at her home, where she delivered the placenta.
“I think having home births in the past sort of taught me to trust my body,” Skaats said. “Knowing the process really helped.”
3. A teenage lifeguard saved a mother’s labor at a YMCA Pool.
Natalie Lucas, a Colorado teenager lifeguard, had an unplanned day at work when a mother gave birth on the pool’s deck.
“I’ve always seen childbirth in movies and the TV shows, but never the real thing. It was definitely eye-opening,” Lucas told TODAY.com in August.
Matthew Jones and Tessa Rider, a pregnant YMCA member, were both at the pool that morning. Rider was floating on a pool noodle as the baby arrived.
Jones replied, “She looks up at me and says, ‘We need to get out of here,’” Jones said. “Tessa has barely made it out of the pool, she’s like two, three steps from the rail. She’s on all fours and she’s visibly in pain and also in the middle of the contraction.”
Rider began “crawling out of the pool,” according to Lucas, and it was clear that birth was imminent.
TODAY.com spoke with Lucas about how her adrenaline kick-in.
“I start … trying to support her and make sure she’s comfortable,” the lifeguard said.
Rider gave birth on the pool deck to Tobin, a baby boy.
“There’s a funny picture of me sitting back-to-back with her so she could put her weight on me to support her and give her some relaxation and calm,” Lucas told TODAY.com. “I was trying to help in any way I can.”
4. A 10-year-old girl delivered her mother’s baby.

5. Mother’s Day: A baby was delivered in a hospital elevator
Texas’s pregnant woman gave birth in an elevator at a hospital instead of in the delivery room.
On Mother’s Day (May 8), Betzabeth Perez and her partner, Adolfo Soto, rushed to Medical City Dallas when her labor started. Eli Davila, security guard, met the couple and told them to take the elevator to their maternity ward.

6. A mother gave birth in mid-air while flying on a plane.
Shakeria Martin, a 37-week-old pregnant passenger, woke up with contractions on a January redeye flight to Orlando. Her first thought:

Martin delivered the placenta after the pilot made an emergency landing at Pensacola International Airport. Martin was assisted by a nurse.
Martin, whose children are 9 and 7, and 2 years old, tells TODAY.com in a follow up interview that she is grateful to the flight crew for helping her daughter Jadalyne Sky, now 11 months, (named after her birthplace).
Martin said that the majority of passengers did not sleep through the birth. They applauded Martin and the pair as they were taken off the plane with a wheelchair. Martin describes it as “a scene from a movie”.
7. A 46-year old woman gave birth to identical triplets after beating all odds
Utah parents Audrey and Tyler Tiberius wanted more children, but at 41, Audrey was told by doctors that she had a 10% chance of conceiving using in vitro fertilization (IVF). Three rounds IVF had already failed.

Rodriguez asked her, “How can I care for my baby without electricity or running water?” Rodriguez said. “I think that’s the worst part — when they go home and they face all the limitations.”
Rodriguez’s clinic was without power and running water. At one point, Rodriguez had to stop treating patients because her generator ran out. Her own home was also without power.
Rodriguez said in a follow-up interview to TODAY.com, that water and electricity were restored to her clinic within two weeks. Also, a generator was working properly. Rodriguez’s house now has electricity.
“My patients are doing well,” she says. “A couple of them lost their homes and their baby’s clothing as a result of the storm, but we as a community are helping them to get back to normal.”
She said that the medical community is still struggling.
