Indiana cop killed in shooting seeks his representation

RICHMOND, Ind. (AP) — A man facing a death penalty charge The victim in the shooting death of an Indiana police officer asked a judge for representation. However, his appointed attorney has decided to withdraw from this case.

Phillip Matthew Lee (47), of Richmond is being charged with murder in connection to the death of Seara Burton, Richmond Police Department Officer. According to court documents, he made a motion Dec. 22 for representation at trial.

Andrew Maternowski (his court-appointed defense attorney) filed a motion asking to withdraw from the case on the same day, according records.

His trial is scheduled for March 7.

Burton, 28, died Sept. 18 She sustained a gunshot injury to her head when she was taken off of life support Sept. 1. She was shot Aug. 10 After officers had stopped Lee and Burton, Burton was summoned to help Lee with her police dog.

The gag order prohibits police, lawyers and other parties from commenting on this case.
