SMU beats Utah State 77 to 74 in Diamond Head Classic semis

HONOLULU (AP) — Zhuric Phelps scored 19 points and Zach Nutall hit a big 3-pointer in the final minute to send SMU to a 77-74 victory over Utah State in the semifinals of the Diamond Head Classic on Friday night.

Phelps had eight rebounds and four assists to help the Mustangs (5-7). SMU’s Nutall made a layup from beyond the arc, giving it a lead of two possessions with 33 seconds remaining.

Samuell Williams scored 15 on 7-10 shooting, with three steals at SMU. Nutall was able to score 13 points while Efe Ogie got 12. Stefan Todorovic scored 10 points from the bench.

Max Shulga, Sean Bairstow, and Max Shulga led the Aggies (10-2), with 18 points each. Bairstow grabbed 8 rebounds. Steven Ashworth scored 15. After a 9-1 start, Utah State has now lost two of its last three matches.

SMU will take on the winner of the other semifinal between Washington State or Hawaii in Sunday’s final.
