Scotty McCreery and Gabi welcomed their first child on October 24, 2012. Merrick Avery McCreeryAvery, who they call their son. The proud papa recently spoke to Southern Living As baby Avery squealed in the background, “It’s been the best thing that I’ve ever done and we’re only 7 weeks in but it’s pretty incredible being a dad. I know, it’s tough to even remember life without him. It’s not even been two months yet.” McCreery also spoke about watching his wife Gabi become a mother. “She’s got this twinkle in her eyes. This is what she was meant for. So Avery’s very lucky to have her as a mom and I help out where I can, you know. But there’s only so much I can do at this stage. But just sitting back and watching her do her thing is pretty incredible.”

The McCreery family’s life has changed over the past two months. “The house is a lot different. The floor downstairs is just a collection of toys for him and small mats. You will find pacis all over the place, including a lot of mats. All stuff by Avery now. Then, I have my studio that I can still record from but the guest room is now Avery’s nursery. So if anyone wants to come hang out for the night they’re gonna have to be on the couch because Avery has the room.”

Moose, his dog, has also adapted well to the new addition. He now realizes that he’s not the center of attention. “We still give him plenty of loving, but he’s never been the biggest cuddler of a dog. He doesn’t cuddle all that much. But I’ll be on the couch and Gabi will be holding Avery and Moose will just come plop up and lay all 65lbs of himself right on me. And it’s just like, well if Avery’s gonna be held then I wanna be held too,” he said with a chuckle. He added, “he gives Avery lots of kisses and I think he knows that’s his brother and Avery’s here to stay.”

American Idol Season 10 Winner Gabi is looking forward to the firsts that he and Gabi will witness together, particularly Christmas.

“This first Christmas for him, he’s not going to remember presents and stuff. However, I think he will remember being at the Christmas tree and seeing all of his presents and all the other stuff. We’ll take plenty of pictures and have a big time with him for that.”

McCreery is looking forward to Avery having Christmas as he gets older, just as he did.

“I just remember how fun it was. It was fun, you know, with the digital clocks. I’d be counting them. For each number. Waiting for, I think it was 7am was when we could finally leave our rooms and go see what Santa brought.”

But he also said he wants his son to remember “the reason for the season,” and plans to carry on family traditions with the next generation.

“My family always read The Christmas Story out of Luke on Christmas Eve before we went to bed. Continuing those traditions with him. That’s something I’m looking forward to.”

“And we’ll be in Louisiana this year for Christmas with Gabi’s family. Being able share him with his family and everyone getting together. We have a little nephew and niece we’ll get to see too down there. Avery was nearly 2 months old when Niece was born. So it will be fun for everybody to hang out.”

McCreery looks forward to spending time with his family, enjoying good food and having a fun Cajun Christmas in Louisiana. Hopefully he’ll get some time to rest up because he’s heading out on the Damn Strait tour In January, he is gearing up to face what he believes will be an active 2023.

Enjoy the holidays McCreery family, and rest easy! Avery, Merry Christmas!
