Pope asks Benedict XVI for prayers for the’very sick’ Benedict XVI

VATICAN CITY (AP) — Pope Francis on Wednesday said his predecessor, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, is “very sick,” and he asked the faithful to pray for the retired pontiff so God will comfort him “to the very end.”

Francis did not elaborate on Benedict’s condition, as he resigned in February 2013 as pontiff. This was the first pope to retire after 600 years.

Benedict, 95, lives at a convent in Vatican grounds. As he devotes his post-papacy years to prayer and meditation, he has become more frail over the years.

“I’d like to ask all of you for a special prayer for Emeritus Pope Benedict, who, in silence, is sustaining the church,” Francis said in remarks near the end of an hour-long audience. ”I remind you that he is very sick,” Francis said.

Francis said, “Let us ask the Lord for comfort and support in this testimony of love towards the church to all the end.”

It was unclear if Francis was referring to Benedict’s general health or his predecessor’s illness.

A Vatican spokesperson, queried about Benedict’s condition, said the press office was seeking details.
