No, North Carolina quarterback Drake Maye wasn’t offered a $5 million NIL deal to transfer away from the Tar Heels.

Maye ended those rumors on Thursday, including one that was promoted by Pat Narduzzi of Pittsburgh. He’s staying with North Carolina.

Maye: “Those rumors were not really reality.” . “Pitt’s coach ended up putting that out there. That was a strange thing. To speak to these schools and receive offers, you must log into the transfer portal. My opinion is that college football will be a mess. They have to do something. They didn’t offer anything to me or my family from any other school. The Mayes received nothing.”

After his fall breakout season, Maye was the subject of many transfer rumors. As a redshirt freshman, he threw for 4,115 yards with 35 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Maye led the Tar Heels to the ACC Championship game and is undoubtedly a top quarterback for the 2024 NFL draft.

Another rumor was that Maye was offered significant money by other schools through NIL deals. However, nothing was confirmed. Narduzzi claimed earlier this week that Maye was offered $5 million by two different schools to transfer, but he wouldn’t say who the schools were.

That, however, just wasn’t the case.

“Some people were texting my high school coach about it,” Maye said, . “That’s mainly what happened, people reached out to some of my representatives and NIL media people.”

Still, it’s more than any possible money for Maye.

Both of his parents went to school at North Carolina, and he lives with his brother, Beau — who walked on to the basketball team. Luke, their older brother, was a Platter for the Tar Heels and scored a buzzer-beater that sent them to the Final Four in 2017.

“It wouldn’t sit right, especially for all my family …”,” he stated about transferring. . “Switching it over after what the Mayes had to go through wouldn’t be representative of what the university means to you or how important it means to me to attend there.” It would destroy the mojo, and everything that we have created there. Carolina blue is a special color. It’s the only color that has meaning.
