LHP T.J. McFarland called up, LHP Josh Walker optioned to Triple-A

Here is a look at the latest Mets roster moves…

June 26, 4:35 p.m.

The Mets are calling up left-hander T.J. McFarland and optioning left-hander Josh Walker to Triple-A Syracuse prior to Monday’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers.

McFarland, 34, made 23 appearances out of the bullpen at Syracuse this season and allowed 12 runs (10 earned) on 30 hits in 32.2 innings good for a 2.76 ERA and 1.439 WHIP. He has walked 17 batters and struck out 37. He made 28 appearances for St. Louis a season ago and pitched to a 6.61 ERA (5.32 FIP) in 32.2 innings.

Walker is coming off a rough outing on Sunday in which he allowed one hit and walked two and was charged with three earned runs. Over seven games this season with the Mets he has allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits with six walks and five strikeouts in six innings. The 28-year-old appeared in six games in June during his second stint in Queens on the season. He has pitched to a 1.45 ERA in 18.2 innings at Triple-A in 2023.

McFarland overlapped with manager Buck Showalter in Baltimore from 2013-2016, beginning his career with the Orioles as a Rule 5 draft pick.

Relief pitcher Drew Smith was also reinstated from his 10-game suspension.

June 24, 11:24 a.m.

The Mets are recalling infielder Danny Mendick from Triple-A Syracuse to fill the vacant spot on the 26-man roster after trading Eduardo Escobar to the Los Angeles Angles on Friday, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

In 68 games with Syracuse this season, the 29-year-old infielder has eight home runs and 35 RBI and slashed .264/.356/.401 for a .757 OPS in 317 plate appearances. He has walked 35 times to go along with 47 strikeouts. Mendick can play second base, third and shortstop.

Last season for the Chicago White Sox, Mendick slashed .289/.343/.443 with a .786 OPS and a 121 OPS+ in 31 games. He had eight extra-base hits and 15 RBI with seven walks and 23 strikeouts in 106 plate appearances before an ACL tear ended his 2022 season on June 22.

Mendick signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Mets in December 2022 after spending his entire in the White Sox organization. He hit .200/.259/.360 in 25 at-bats in the Grapefruit League this spring before being optioned to Triple-A ahead of Opening Day.

In 151 big league games over four seasons, Mendick has a career .251 batting average and a .675 OPS (85 OPS+) with 13 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs and 45 RBI.

Escobar was dealt (with cash considerations) for a pair of minor league pitchers, Coleman Crow and Landon Marceaux, during the Mets’ 5-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night.

June 22, 8:05 p.m.

After struggling in his his last outing on Wednesday against the Houston Astros, the Mets have optioned RHP Tylor Megill to Triple-A Syracuse.

Megill allowed four runs on four hits over just 2.1 IP with four walks and two strikeouts, but escaped with a no-decision in New York’s 10-8 loss.

The 27-year-old has had an up-and-down season, going 6-4 with a 5.17 ERA over 15 starts with 58 strikeouts in 71.1 innings of work. Megill has pitched to a 6.68 ERA over his last seven starts (23 earned runs in 31.0 IP), going 2-2 in those outings.

In a corresponding move, New York is expected to call up right-hander Vinny Nittoli before Friday’s series opener against the Phillies, according to numerous reports.

The Mets acquired Nittoli from the Cubs in a deal earlier this month.

He has a 5.06 ERA across 5.1 innings with Syracuse so far but has recorded three consecutive scoreless outings. Overall on the season, Nittoli has a 3.81 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in 21 appearances in Triple-A.

June 19, 3:45 p.m.

Prior to Monday’s game against the Astros, the Mets optioned John Curtiss to Triple-A Syracuse and selected the contract of right-hander Grant Hartwig.

In 21 appearances with Syracuse this season, he has allowed 14 runs (12 earned) on 27 hits in 25.2 innings pitched for a 4.21 ERA and 1.63 WHIP. The 25-year-old has allowed three home runs and walked 15 batters while striking out 35. He has finished 11 games for the club and has recorded three saves.

Hartwig has been assigned the No. 93 jersey and his first appearance will be his major league debut. He joined the organization as a free agent signing out of college in 2021.

Curtiss, who has been back and forth between Syracuse and Queens this season, made two appearances in his latest stint with the big league club.

He allowed one run (a Jordan Walker homer) on two hits with one walk and a strikeout in 2.2 innings of work in Sunday’s game. He has pitched to a 4.08 ERA (5.26 FIP) in 17.2 innings for the Mets in 2023.

June 18, 11:28 a.m.

The Mets announced first baseman Pete Alonso has been reinstated from the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday’s game against the St. Louis Cardinals and in a corresponding move, Mark Vientos has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

Vientos made 49 plate appearances in the majors since being called up on May 17 and slashed .178/.225/.244.

June 15, 2:15 p.m.

The Mets announced on Thursday that they’ve activated RHP Stephen Ridings from the injured list and optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse.

The Mets claimed Ridings off waivers from the Yankees this offseason. He was placed on the 60-day IL in early May due to a lat strain he suffered in spring training.

He’s been working his way back since, and has thrown three rehab appearances with Low-A St. Lucie, including a perfect inning with a pair of strikeouts on Wednesday.

With the bullpen a bit shorthanded this week, Ridings could be making his Mets debut sooner rather than later.

The 27-year-old made his MLB debut last year with the Yankees, and he struck out seven while allowing just one run over five appearances.

June 13, 7:11 p.m.

The Mets announced prior to Tuesday’s series opener against the Yankees that they have released RHP Tommy Hunter and outrighted Stephen Nogosek to Triple-A Syracuse.

Both pitchers were designated for assignment last week.

In 14 appearances this season with the Mets, Hunter pitched to a 6.85 ERA. His final appearance was June 9 against the Pirates where he gave up two runs in two innings.

Nogosek made 13 appearances and pitched to a 5.61 ERA. His last outing was June 8 against the Braves where he gave up a run in 1.1 innings pitched.

June 13, 4:50 p.m.

The Mets have signed Matt Minnick to a minor league deal and assigned him to Double-A Binghamton.

The left-hander was released earlier this week by the Yankees, who took him in the 23rd round of the 2019 MLB draft out of Mercyhurst College.

Minnick spent the past two seasons in the minors with the Bombers, pitching to a 3.00 ERA and 1.07 WHIP while striking out 147 batters.

He’s made just one appearance at Triple-A and struggled, but was dominant in Double-A last season. Minnick led the league with a stellar 0.74 WHIP and struck out 62 batters over 59.2 innings.

He is yet to pitch this season.

June 10, 1:10 p.m.

Following the Mets’ 14-7 loss in Pittsburgh, the team announced Saturday that veteran right-hander Tommy Hunter had been designated for assignment and the recently recalled left-hander Zach Muckenhirn was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

In a pair of corresponding moves, right-hander John Curtiss and left-hander Josh Walker were both recalled from Triple-A.

Hunter struggled in his last two outings, pitching on both Thursday and Friday night, and allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits with three home runs in 2.2 innings. The 36-year-old appeared in 14 games this season and allowed 20 runs (18 earned) over 23.2 innings for a 6.85 ERA (5.77 FIP).

Muckenhirn allowed three runs on six hits in 2.1 innings in Friday’s loss. He now has a 6.00 ERA in 6.0 innings of work this season for the Mets.

Curtiss returns to the big leagues after appearing in 11 games in April and early May. He pitched to a 4.85 ERA in 13.0 innings. Walker returns after making his MLB debut on May 16, walking two batters in one inning of work.

June 9, 4:38 p.m.

It was a busy Friday afternoon for the Amazins’ who made a flurry of roster moves prior to their game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

With Pete Alonso going on the IL, New York recalled INF Luis Guillorme from Triple-A Syracuse, along with LHP Zach Muckenhirn. To make room for the lefty, the Mets designated RHP Stephen Nogosek for assignment.

Tomas Nido also cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A. The Mets DFA’d Nido earlier in the week after Omar Narvaez returned from the IL.

June 6, 3:30 p.m.

The Mets have signed left-hander Tyler Thomas to a minor league deal and assigned him to Double-A Binghamton.

The 27-year-old southpaw posted a 0.90 ERA and struck out 34 batters across 15 appearances this season with the Gastonia Honey Hunters in the Atlantic League.

Prior to that, Thomas spent five seasons in the Texas Rangers organization and reached as high as Triple-A. He pitched to a 3.78 ERA and struck out 263 batters in that span.

June 3, 1:50 p.m.

Prior to Saturday’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, the Mets announced a pair of roster moves.

Jimmy Yacabonis, who was DFA’d just a few days ago, cleared waivers and has been sent down to Triple-A. The righty has a 9.00 ERA through nine big league innings this season.

Additionally, Vinny Nittoli, who was recently acquired from the Chicago Cubs, was added to the 40-man roster and he was also sent to Syracuse. 

June 2, 9:05 a.m.

The Mets acquired right-handed pitcher Vinny Nittoli from the Chicago Cubs organization, according to multiple reports.

The Mets will add the 32-year-old to their 40-man roster, but he can be optioned to the minor leagues, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo reported. Nittoli had exercised an opt-out clause on his minor league deal with the Cubs leading to the trade.

Nittoli has appeared in just three games at the big league level, one in 2021 with Seattle and two in 2022 with Philadelphia. He allowed two runs on one hit (a home run) over three innings with two strikeouts, three walks and a hit batter.

In 16 appearances with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs this season, the right-hander has allowed 12 runs (eight earned) on 18 hits in 20.2 innings for a 3.48 ERA. He got tagged for two home runs and walked seven while striking out 22 with a 1.210 WHIP.

Across three Triple-A clubs a season ago, he posted a 3.81 ERA and 1.038 WHIP in 52.0 innings pitched over 37 games including four starts.

May 30, 3:15 p.m.

The Mets have made an addition to their Triple-A depth, acquiring 1B/3B Tyler White from the Minnesota Twins.

White last appeared at the big-league level back in 2019 with the Dodgers and Astros. Across 256 career MLB games, he has 26 home runs and a .752 OPS.

Through 16 games down in Triple-A this season, White’s slashing .259/.386/.414 with two homers and three doubles. The Mets have assigned him to Triple-A Syracuse.

May 19, 6:06 p.m.

The Mets welcome Carlos Carrasco back to the roster as he starts for New York on Friday. To make room for their veteran starter, they optioned LHP Josh Walker to Triple-A Syracuse.

Walker made just one appearance for the Mets this season, May 16 against the Rays, where he pitched an inning and allowed two walks.

The 28-year-old was a non-roster invitee but made the roster and got sent to Syracuse after he finished spring training.

Additionally, RHP Jimmy Yacabonis was reinstated from the IL and designated for assignment.

May 16, 4:11 p.m.

Prior to Tuesday night’s series opener with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Mets optioned David Peterson to Triple-A Syracuse.

After a breakout 2022 season, and strong spring showing, many expected Peterson to be strong depth for the Mets’ starting rotation. That, however, has not been the case so far in 2023.

Peterson has struggled mightily through eight starts, posting an 8.08 ERA and 1.74 WHIP. In his most recent outing, Monday against the Nationals, he allowed six runs over five innings.

With Carlos Carrasco set to rejoin the rotation later this week, Peterson can go back down to Triple-A and work through his kinks.

In a corresponding roster move, the Mets have recalled Josh Walker from Syracuse. The 28-year-old lefty has a 0.68 ERA and 0.90 WHIP through nine appearances this season.

May 14, 11:18 p.m.

The Mets announced prior to Sunday’s doubleheader that they’ve recalled right-hander Dennis Santana from Triple-A.

Santana presumably will help provide the Mets with depth in Game 1 of the double-dip, which will be picked up in the top of the third. In seven big league appearances this season, he has a 7.04 ERA.

In a bit of an interesting corresponding roster move, the Mets have sent Joey Lucchesi down to Syracuse.

The left-hander is the “current” active pitcher in this afternoon’s suspended game. Lucchesi allowed one run on four hits across two innings of work prior to the game being called.

Seth Elledge has been designated for assignment to make room for Santana on the 40-Man roster.

May 1, 4:45 p.m.

Between games of Monday’s doubleheader, the Mets selected the contract of left-handed relief pitcher Zach Muckenhirn from Triple-A Syracuse.

In six appearances for Syracuse this season, Muckenhirn has allowed just one run on 10 hits in 11.2 innings pitched (0.77 ERA) while walking four and striking out four.

In a corresponding move, right-hander Denyi Reyes was optioned back to Syracuse. Reyes struggled in his start in Game 1, allowing five runs in one inning.

The Mets also transferred RHP Stephen Ridings to the 60-day Injured List.

April 30, 2:21 p.m.

After Sunday’s game against the Atlanta Braves was rained out, the Mets announced right-hander Jose Butto‘s option to Triple-A Syracuse.

A corresponding move was not immediately announced.

The 25-year-old has made two starts for the Mets this season, pitching to a 2.79 ERA over his 9.2 innings.

April 29, 4:55 p.m.

Inclement weather stopped the Mets from playing Saturday, but the team announced right-handed reliever Adam Ottavino was reinstated from the paternity list.

In a corresponding move, the Mets optioned David Peterson to Triple-A Syracuse. The left-hander struggled to start the season. In six starts, he had allowed 25 runs (all earned) on 38 hits over 30.2 innings for a 7.34 ERA (5.37 FIP).

Peterson only walked 10 and struck out 36 during that span, but he was stung for eight home runs, nearly equaling his total of 11 from a season ago and in less than a third as many innings pitched.

April 27, 2:40 p.m.

Veteran reliever Adam Ottavino has been placed on the paternity list, with the Mets recalling RHP Denyi Reyes from Triple-A Syracuse.

In 11 games, Ottavino has a 2.70 ERA and 1.10 WHIP with 11 strikeouts over 10.0 IP this season.

Reyes, 26, has appeared in five games for the Mets this year and has tossed 6.1 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts and just three hits allowed.

April 6, 2:35 p.m.

The Mets have claimed right-handed pitcher Edwin Uceta off waivers from the Pittsburgh Pirates, while transferring reliever Sam Coonrod to the 60-day Injured List.

Uceta, 25, has been optioned to Triple-A Syracuse.

The right-hander has 24 career big league appearances, including 14 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021 and 10 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2022, pitching to a career 6.27 ERA.

Coonrod, dealing with a high-grade lat strain, was originally placed on the 15-day IL retroactive to March 27.
