José Andrés Recalls When He Accidentally ‘Burned the Eyelashes of My Daughters’

José Andrés He may be an amazing humanitarian, but his daughters say he is not a perfect father.

On Wednesday’s episode His podcast Longer Tables with José Andrés, the chef had his three daughters, Carlota, 23, Inés, 21, Lucía, 18, on as guests, where they talked about what it’s like to grow up with a celebrity chef as a dad and to travel through his home country filming their new show, José Andrés and Spain: Families.

She said to her father on the podcast, “I thought that you were trying to kill me because we got so close one of those sculptures.” “My face was on fire. It was bloody. It was red.

“Are they saying that I put you in danger?” Andrés, 53, asked his daughter.

“I was scared that my eyelashes were gonna burn off again,” Inés added.

“Again? “Again? Carlota asked.

Clarifying, Andrés jumped in, “Hold on, hold on. What are you talking about? What happened before?

This story is well-known to all. We cook paella at our home every year, a family tradition. The paella-making skills of the girls are still being learned. I believe this was five years ago. A really windy day, we cook paella rain or shine,” Inés started off.

“And I’m there managing the fire. I lean down to add more wood and then a gust comes in. She said that flame was getting near her face and burning my eyelashes,” she remembered.

Carlota jokingly said, “But she now have the longest eyelashes in this family, so we must all ask her what her trick was.”

“You know, you gotta be careful cooking paella,” Inés warned listeners.

“I was aware at that moment?” Andrés asked, to which his daughter replied, “Yes, you were aware.”

“I was aware that I burned your eyelashes,” he reiterated what Inés told him, confused. She stated that she recommends paella being cooked over an open flame, but caution is advised.

Carlota came back to the table, adding that the exact same thing had happened to her. “Dad, you really burned my eyelashes also.”

Though Andrés didn’t recall how or when this happened, Carlota told him, “You did, this is your doing.”

Lucia joined the conversation and revealed to her father, “You actually left my in a supermarket once. But we can get back there later.”

Not brushing off his youngest’s claim, Andrés repeats what she told him, “Hold on, hold on. I want to know why you left me in the supermarket.

“Dad! You know!” Inés exclaimed.

“Inés was mostly at fault there, but you were the one driving the car and forgot to count heads,” Lucia reminded her father.

After reminding his daughters of the importance of the episode to important people, one of the girls laughed and said, “We’re just showing people who you really are, man.”

Later, Andrés addresses his audience: “So my dear friends of Longer TablesBecause I burned my daughter’s eyes, you might think I’m a monster. Oh, I forgot to bring my daughters to the supermarket. I have my moments, but I don’t pretend to be perfect.

“We’re an imperfect perfect family,” Inés said, adding that they are “dysfunctional at times” after her father used that would to describe their dynamic.

“Like probably every family around the world, and that’s why we love each other,” Andrés noted.

José Andrés and Family in SpainThis documentary, which was premiered Tuesday on Discovery+, follows the humanitarian as they travel with their daughters in their home country.
