John Y. Brown attends his first game as owner; Glen Davis was born
The anniversary of the closing chapter in Boston Celtics’ history falls on this day. This is why it’s so appropriate for the first day.
In 1979John Y., the new owner, is the new owner of the storied franchise. Brown, attended his very first game as the Celtics’ owner. That in and of itself is nothing especially remarkable, but Brown — former owner of the team which later became the Los Angeles Clippers — had just recently finalized the only “trade” of a franchise in league (and possibly all) history.
Another way to put it, the Clippers of Bill Russell, Tommy Heinsohn and KC Jones are, strictly speaking, the Celtics.

After David Stern, future commissioner of the league, struck a deal, all records, rosters, and other information remained with each club. ex-Celtics owner Irv LevinThe league denied permission to move the team to Southern California.
Stern, an up-and-coming personality in the league, managed to negotiate a deal to have Buffalo Braves owner Brown to “trade” franchise rights, permitting Levin to move the Braves to L.A., where they became the Clippers.

It is also Glen “Big Baby” Davis’ birthday.
Davis was drafted by the Seattle Supersonics as the 35th overall pick in the 2007 NBA draft. He never played for the team that traded him to Boston the night he was selected.
Ray Allen purchased his draft rights as part the package that made Ray Allen a member of the team. It also made Banner 17 and the Kevin Garnett deal possible.

Big Baby was a notable player for the team. This is unusual for a rookie and even more so for one who was drafted in round 2.
Davis was an important player in the rotation for many years. until he was traded As part of the package that brought Brandon Bass the Celtics.
