John Bagley resigns; most team rebounds against the Detroit Pistons; Jack Nichols dies

John Bagley, the Boston Celtics’ point guard, signed a free agency contract on this historic day in Boston Celtics’ history. Bagley was a Boston College student who played basketball during college. He was the 12th overall pick in the 1982 NBA draft by Cleveland Cavaliers.

He would then play for that club. The (then) New Jersey Nets (now Brooklyn) Nets traded Bagley to the Celtics for draft assets in 1989. Bagley’s first campaign with the team was marred by tendonitis and subsequent surgery. His rehabilitation lasted well beyond his contract, into the 1990-91 season.

After he had returned to action, the Celtics signed him on December 2, 1992.

He would only play 10 more games for the franchise.

As a member of the Boston Celtics, he would score 5.7 points and record 1.9 rebounds as well as 5.8 assists.

It was also on this date that the Celtics pulled down more rebounds than in any other game in their franchise’s history — and in one of their highest-scoring games as well.

It was accomplished in a 150 to106 win over the Detroit Pistons. In 1960, Boston captured 109 boards in a single match.

It was also the day in which Jack Nichols, a Celtics forward, resigned from us in 1992.

Nichols was born in 1926. He attended the University of Washington as well as the University of Southern California. After that, he was drafted by the now defunct Washington Capitols.

After stints with the Tri-Cities Blackhawks/Milwaukee Hawks (now, Atlanta), Hawks, Nichols was reunited with Red Auerbach, former Capitols coach, to join the Celtics.

In the five seasons that he played for Boston, he averaged 8.7 point, 6.8 rebound, and 1.7 assists per match.
