Jaylen Watson’s playing time on the rise

On Christmas Eve, the Kansas City Chiefs beat the Seattle Seahawks 24-10

This week there was a significant difference in defensive and offensive snap counts. It speaks volumes about how busy Tommy Townsend’s offense was on Saturday. Six punts against the Seahawks was his single-game record.

What other lessons can we draw from the weekly snap number? Here’s a look at how the snaps came down in Week 16:

Observations

  • Justin Watson’s offensive snaps are exceedingly high given his lack of production. He hasn’t had any catches despite being targeted eight times over the past three games, including four times in Week 16. In that same span, he’s played no less than 65% of the offensive snaps.

  • Jerick McKinnon is right around the same snap percentage every week as Isiah Pacheco. The big difference has been McKinnon’s ability to get into the end zone, with six touchdowns in the last four weeks.

  • Kadarius was up to 22 snaps after only playing 10 snaps a week earlier. I’d expect another increase in snaps during Week 17 against the Denver Broncos.

  • Skyy Moore’s snaps are going the wrong way. This is the time of the year that you’d expect him to play more often. However, he only played his smallest offensive snaps since Week 3.

  • Blake Bell only played six offensive snaps upon his return to action. The team is limiting his workload now, but I’d like to hope he’d be able to get more involved come playoff time. His ability as an inline blocker in the running and passing game is crucial.

  • In Week 16, five defenders (McDuffie Bolton Reid Reid Sneed and Thornhill) played 100% of the defensive snaps.

  • Only 61% of defensive snaps were played by Willie Gay Jr. on Sunday. This writer thinks he should always be available in situations that require at least two linebackers.

  • Jaylen Watson had his most snaps in one game since Week 7. He’s been in a platoon situation with Joshua Williams, who was benched until late in the game after a pair of penalties in the second quarter.

  • Derrick Nnadi, who had 31 snaps in defense, was second most active player of the season. Surprisingly Brandon Williams took fewer snaps in Week 16, than he did in the previous week. In his 2022 debut for the Chiefs, Danny Shelton played only nine snaps.

  • Chris Lammons (Nazeeh Johnson), Jack Cochrane and Deon Bush played only special teams snaps during Week 15.

  • Lammons and Leo Chenal led the special team unit with 20 total snaps.
