Sep. 28—Nautilus 70th anniversary noted Sept. 30

The Submarine Force Library and Museum will mark the 70th anniversary of the commissioning of USS Nautilus (SSN-571), its main exhibit and the world’s first nuclear powered vessel, during a special ceremony in front of the historic ship, Monday, Sept. 30, at 2 p.m.

Commissioned Sept. 30, 1954, the Nautilus and crew steamed more than half a million miles during 25 years of active service. More than 200 nuclear-powered U.S. ships and submarines have followed in Nautilus’ pioneering wake.

Named a National Historic Landmark in 1982 and Connecticut’s State Ship in 1985, Nautilus joined the Submarine Force Library and Museum as its main exhibit, on April 11, 1986, 86 years to the day since the birth of the U.S. Submarine Force. Today, the Museum and historic ship host more than 150,000 visitors a year.

Upcoming Events at the Lyme Library in October

Special events at Lyme Public Library in October include the Oct. 3 author reading of “Killing Grace: A Vietnam War Mystery” author reading with by Peter Prichard at 6 p.m.

On Oct. 10 at 5 p.m, the “Twice Told Tales” Film Series with Academy Award-Winning screenwriter Janet Roach will begin at 5 p.m., featuring the 1957 movie “Silk Stockings” with Syd Charisse and Fred Astaire directed by Rouben Mamoulian. The new movie series will be exploring two different films that are based on the same plot and screenplay but are created by two different directors and leading actors. The series will be screening two movies over two weeks with a potluck dinner after the second movie and a chance to get together and discuss the films.

Another event will be the Oct. 19 Lyme Volunteer Fair, from 2 to 4 p.m., where attendees will hear how volunteers play a critical role in keeping Lyme safe, operational, and fiscally responsible.

In addition, the Connecticut Horror Writers will hold a special Halloween program for adults at 6 p.m. Oct. 30 called “Fright Night” with a panel of Connecticut horror writers and horror trivia with prizes, followed by the showing of a film called “Sweet, Sweet, Lonely Girl” by A.D. Calvo.

The library also offers a yoga and meditation series, craft club, chess club, children’s story times, a cookbook club, book clubs, American Mah Jongg club and, at 11 a.m. Oct. 19, a Halloween S.T.E.A.M. Lab where young minds will explore the mysteries of Halloween through science experiments and activities, for ages 3-6.

Safe Futures honors National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Safe Futures will be hosting its annual Safe Walk on Oct. 6. A craft fair and same-day registration will begin at 8 a.m., while the Safe Walk will kick-off at 9 a.m. It will be located at the Waterford Duck Pond Park in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

The event will also include a craft fair with local vendors, raffle baskets for all ages and interests, breakfast food trucks and, live music. Upcoming events at Groton Public Library

Groton Public Library special events for the month of October will include the Haunted Halloween Magic Show, on Oct. 5 at 11 a.m. with award-winning magician Tommy James.

On Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. the drop by the children’s activity room will have fall crafts to create a pumpkin design with paper or use yarn to thread a squirrel craft, available while supplies last. Another event will be storytime where children can settle down for bed with stories, gentle songs, and a quiet activity on Oct. 10, at 6:15 p.m.

In addition there will a tween event, pick up a spooky-themed book and craft, available while supplies last ages 9-12. The event will be on Oct.17, from 3 to 9 p.m. Another event will be crafts bags that include instructions and most of the supplies you need on Oct. 28, from 3 to 9 p.m.

Preston cemetery tour Oct. 5

Walktober events this year will include an Oct. 5 tour of Preston City Cemetery from 10 to 11:30 a.m. From noon to 1 p.m. the walk will travel to Doane Park to talk about William H. Doane. After the walk is finished there will be refreshments at 1 p.m. and a tour of the church. David Oats will point out important tombstones at the Preston City Cemetery.

Town picnic in Killingworth Oct. 5

The Killingworth Town Picnic will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Deer Lake Outdoor Center. The proceeds of the event will go to camp scholarships for Deer Lake and Homes for the Brave. There will be bands performing, a large raffle and, beer garden by Barrelhouse.

Live music at Nightingale’s in Old Lyme

WHS Class of 1972 70th birthday celebration Oct. 12

Waterford High School will hold a 70th birthday celebration for 1972 graduates from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Capt. Scott’s, 70 Howard St., New London.

True to the Halloween season, “Paranormal Tales” with Joe Franke will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 29, featuring a renowned investigator, demonologist, lecturer, and consultant in the paranormal realm.

Martyrs Orthodox Church Annual Russian Festival

The Martyrs Orthodox Church will hold its Annual Russian Festival on Oct. 5 at 364 Canterbury Turnpike in Norwich from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The festival will have Slavic food available for people in attendance, and there will be a raffle, bookstore, and crafts for children’s activities. The Public Library has a new list of events each month for teens, and in October it includes a Teen Advisory Board 4 to 5 p.m. Oct. 1 and a College Fair from 4 to 6 p.m. Oct. 2.

A Teen Movie Series starting at 3 p.m. Oct. 4 will focus on Hispanic heritage, and a Teen Graphic Novel Club runs 2 to 3 p.m. Oct. 5. A cooking club, Magic the Gathering games, Manga book club, creative writing club and board game night also are on tap this month.

Bill Memorial Library annual Artisan Market

The Bill Memorial Library presents its Annual Artisan Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at the City of Groton Municipal Building, 295 Meridian St. The event showcases more than 30 local artisans and vendors selling handmade items in jewelry, decor, art, soaps, knitted goods, woodcraft, and more. East Lyme library events in October

Exploring the Benefits of Mindfulness with Jessica Williamson will be offered at East Lyme Public Library at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 1.

And the library will host a series of Anti-Racism Workshops in three sessions starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, sponsored by the Niantic Community Church. The first session will be an introduction into the historical precedents and current conditions of race in America.

The library also offers paint and craft programs, a chess club, trivia night, book clubs and special events such as “Bewitched: Dress Styles During the Time of the Salem Witch Trials” with Karen Antonowicz on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 6:30 p.m.

Otis Library children’s events in October

Children’s events in October at Otis Library in Norwich includes storytimes, a dance party, Mother Goose Mondays and a bookworm group.

Also, check out the creative movement class at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, and SlimeTime at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 12.

Homeschoolers are invited to a Meet & Greet from 11 a.m. to noon Wednesday, Oct. 16. No registration is required.

Other offerings include an Innovation Expedition class for ages 9-14, LEGO Robotics for ages 9-11 and Tumbling Toddlers for 2-year-olds. A special Halloween Haunts program runs from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 30, when ghost stories will be told and costumed kids 6-11 will make a creepy chocolate dessert.
