Chaney-Washington-Scott trade; most FGAs in one game

This was the day that Boston Celtics’ legendary franchise traded Charlie Scott, point guard, for Don Chaney, power forward Kermit Washington, and a first-round draft selection to their rival Los Angeles Lakers.

Chaney had been picked up from the University of Houston with the 12th overall pick of the 1968 NBA draft by the Celtics, with a stop in the American Basketball Association’s (ABA – a competing league that would later merge with the NBA) Spirit of St. Louis franchise before signing with Los Angeles later on in his pro career.

Washington, who was born at American University, was the 5th overall pick in the 1973 NBA draft. His involvement in a brawl that left a player with serious injuries forced Washington to trade.

“Washington was the key, a big man, a board banger who can help Cowens,” said then-coach Tommy Heinsohn via the Washington Post’s Paul Attner.

Scott was also drafted by the Celtics with the 106th pick. There were many more rounds during that era, but Scott decided to go to the ABA to play for the Virginia Squires. He eventually joined the Phoenix Suns, who traded him to Boston in 1975.

It also marks the day that the Celtics attempted more field goals in their seven-decade-long history, which began in 1960.

It was in a video game against the (then) Philadelphia Warriors The Boston shot attempt that resulted in a road loss of 116 to 101 was the 136th.

Given that the Celtics failed to connect on 39 shots (28.6% accuracy), efficiency appears to have been the main culprit.
