Canadians praise Girl Guides’ swift name change from the “Brownies”, to “Embers”, after racial backlash

The Girl Guides of Canada announced the new name of the branch that serves seven-year-old participants. It was done in an effort to be more inclusive.

It was decided that the Comets and Embers were the best choices after a vote.

“Embers may be small, but they’re full of potential and when they work together, they can ignite a powerful flame,” The Girl Guides of Canada wrote on a social media post, announcing the change.

The unit was formerly known as “Brownies”, which some felt was discriminatory and harmful towards racialized members. When choosing a new name for the unit, current and former members of racialized communities were consulted.

“We have heard from racialized girls that this name has caused them harm,” the organization wrote on social media back in November. “We cannot cause harm to any girls, so we are taking action to create a place where all girls belong.”

Online, many celebrated the announcement and praised the organization for their concern for the well-being of their members.

Some weren’t aware of the negative implications that the group’s former name had on them.

Some people weren’t impressed by the choice.

Others were interested in the mechanics of how embers work.

The official transition to the new name will take place on September 1st. Parents who need guidance regarding the name change are invited to learn more about it here.
