Frau charged with repeatedly poisoning her husband

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — A Wisconsin woman accused of repeatedly poisoning her veterinarian husband with animal euthanasia drugs has been charged with attempted first-degree intentional homicide.

Amanda Chapin (50), of Monroe, was indicted Dec. 28 by Lafayette County. The Wisconsin State Journal reported that she had poisoned Gary Chapin, her husband, three times between July and August. She put barbiturates into Chapin’s coffee.

According to a criminal charge, the couple married in March. Amanda Chapin signed the signature of one her husband’s children onto a power of attorney document after the wedding. She then demanded that her husband amend the house deed to ensure she got the house if he died. She allegedly poisoned her husband within three weeks of the authorization of the quit claim deed for the house.

According to the complaint, he was in a coma for four days after consuming the poisoned coffee the third time. His bloodwork revealed that he had barbiturates in the system, which was likely due to drugs he used for the euthanization of animals.

Gary Chapin’s son filed a restraining or against Amanda Chapin for his father. Gary Chapin filed for divorce according to online court records.

According to the criminal complaint, Amanda Chapin violated the restraining order in September when she sent her husband a suicide note via email, writing that she had decided to kill herself because his children would “destroy” her. She denied repeatedly poisoning him.

“The only thing I am guilty of is loving you SOOOOOOOOOO MUCH,” the note, which was included in the complaint, said.

After paramedics brought her to a nearby hospital, she survived the suicide attempt. Gary Chapin filed for divorcement the following day.

According to online court records, attorney Adam Witt represents Amanda Chapin in the case of homicide. Witt is listed as a Green County public defender on the Wisconsin Bar Association’s website. An email asking for comment was not immediately returned by Witt.
