Reese scores 13, No. 18 Arizona women beat Cal 62-56

BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Cate Reese scored six of her 13 points in the fourth quarter, Shaina Pellington added 12 points and No. California was defeated 62-56 by Arizona Saturday night, its fifth consecutive win.

Kailyn Gilbert scored 10 goals for Arizona (11-1 Pac-12, 2-0 Pac-12).

Jayda Curry led Cal (9-4, 0-2) with 13 points — eight in the fourth quarter — but was just 4-of-17 shooting. Leilani McCIntosh scored 12 points and Kemery Martin added 11.

Curry made back to back layups just 18 seconds apart during a 14-5 run that reduced Cal’s deficit by six points. Onyiah made two free baskets with 3:35 left to play in the third quarter. Curry and McIntosh each made three-pointers in an early fourth period 13-4 run. With 6:20 remaining, Curry scored two free points. Cate Reese hit a jumper and Esmery Martinez stole the ball the other direction for a layup. The Wildcats led all the way.

Martinez, Arizona’s third-leading scorer (12.7 per game) and leading rebounder (9.8), fouled out with two points and four rebounds — both season lows — in 13 minutes.

Cal scored 6 seconds into the first quarter with a layup by Evelien Lutjeschipholt. Jade Loville responded 50 seconds later with a 3-pointer that gave the Wildcats an immediate lead. This sparked a 10-0 run in which the Golden Bears couldn’t score for the next five minutes.

Lutje Schipholt had a layup that capped an 8-2 spurt to close the first quarter. Cal’s deficit was cut to 12-10 as Cal entered the second. The Wildcats shot 31.3% (5 out 16) in quarter one. In the second quarter, they hit 10 out of 14 from the field, including nine made field goals to close the half 33-20.
