Two people are killed when Mini falls into a river on Christmas Day

Tributes have poured in for a “funny and intelligent” mum who died on Christmas Day after her Mini plunged into a river, killing a male passenger.

After the car was veered off the highway in Swansea and struck a tree, Rachel Curtis (36) and Jay Jenkins (36), were both found dead.

After being called at 3am, investigators discovered the car completely submerged in River Tawe and were able to recover the bodies.

They are asking for witnesses, CCTV and dashcam footage owners, and anyone who came in contact with the couple during the hours leading up to the tragedy.

Tributes were given to Rachel, a Swansea-based charity fundraiser and self-employed nail technician, who was the driver.

In a statement, her family described her as “a funny, intelligent and unique person” who was “extremely talented and creative” in her therapeutic nail art.

They said that the mom-of-one was also a security instructor and self defense instructor, and had been trained as a supervisor of doors and close protection officers.

Rachel also contributed to the fundraising efforts for suicide prevention charity Jack Lewis Foundation and Matthews House for homelessness. She was also involved with youth projects that help young girls.

“Rachel will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her, especially her 14-year-old son,” her family added.

Two people killed in a Christmas Day tragedy when a Mini crashed into river had been friends for more than 20 years, police said today(Thurs). 

Mum Rachel Curtis, 36, and passenger Jay Jenkins (PICTURED) also 36, were found dead in the water after the car sunk into the river at around 3am.

Self-employed nail artist and charity fundraiser Rachel was behind the wheel of the Mini when it crashed into the River Tawe in Swansea, South Wales. 

Electrician Jay had been school friends with mum-of-one Rachel and the pair had known each other for more than 20 years.

At 3am, emergency services arrived on the scene at A483Newcut Road after passers-by reported that a car was in the water.

Although police claimed that no other vehicles were involved in the accident, investigations continue.
