Dominican officials sent 10 to prison after trying to murder Hall of Famer David Ortiz

According to The Associated Press, 10 Dominican citizens were convicted of the attempted murder on Tuesday. Rolfi Ferreyra Cruz, the alleged shooter, was sentenced to 30 year imprisonment for his role in the attack. Eight others received sentences ranging from five to 20 years. Due to insufficient evidence, three other men were acquitted.

Ortiz was born in Dominican Republic. He jumped off his motorcycle and shot him in back at close range at Santo Domingo bars. Ortiz was taken immediately to a local medical facility and had surgery. Later, he was flown to the United States for a second operation. Since then, he is fully recovered.

Ortiz was allegedly targeted by a Dominican drug trafficker who was jealous of him, though specific motive isn’t clear. According to the report, they were charged with criminal organization and use of illegal firearms. They also faced charges for attempted murder and complicity.
