Sep. 21—Holland family talks about sub design

Irish designer and sculptor Shane Holland will talk about his family’s links to John P. Holland, father of the modern submarine, at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26 at Groton Public Library, where a full scale Irish racing currach will be displayed.

As part of his presentation, sponsored by the Albany and New London Currach Rowing Clubs and the New London John P. Holland Division, Ancient Order of Hibernians, Holland will talk about his role as captain of the Currachai na Sceiri Rowing Club and will discuss in general his family’s interest in Irish maritime history.

The USS Holland (SS-1), was the first ship in the U.S. Navy Submarine Service, while the first English submarine was called the HMS Holland. The Holland family’s perspective of this historical story will be presented.

Leffingwell Museum hosts celebration Oct. 5

The Leffingwell House Museum in Norwich will hold “Hunt for Scarecrows” from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday Oct. 5. The ribbon cutting will be at 11:30 a.m. followed at noon by the Proclamations from the city and state in remembrance of the Founders of Norwich. For information, email [email protected].

Noank Volunteer Fire Company event

Noank Volunteer Fire Company will hold its annual open house from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at 10 Ward Ave. in Noank. There will be free food and fire engine rescue vehicles on display. Children are welcome.

Salem voter list to be revised Oct. 1

The Registrars of Voters office in Salem will hold a special session at the Registrars’ office in Salem Town Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 1, from 10 a.m. to noon to revise the active registry list of voters.

Voters who have died, become disfranchised or confirmed that they have moved out of town will be removed from the active registry list. The session will also remove all voters who did not respond within 30 days to a notice sent four years ago confirming their voting residence.

Alzheimer’s Association Walk Sept. 28

The Connecticut Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association 2024 Walk to End Alzheimer’s Eastern CT is on Sept. 28 at Ocean Beach Park, opening at 9 a.m. The Promise Garden Ceremony begins at 10 a.m. and the walk kicks off at 10:30 a.m. Participants honor those affected by Alzheimer’s and all other dementia with the poignant Promise Garden ceremony. Anti-racism series begins Oct. 5 in Niantic

Niantic Community Church will host the first in a three-part anti-racism series on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 9:30 to11 a.m. at the East Lyme Public Library. This first presentation is an introduction to basic vocabulary, historical precedents, and current conditions of race in our country. The presentation demonstrates how race was created, maintained, and manipulated throughout U.S. history.

The program concludes with an opportunity for questions and discussion. Aqua Drakes and Katie Burton will facilitate the conversation, which is funded by PARJE (Public Art for Racial Justice Education). Those interested in attending are asked to register by accessing the library’s calendar of events or by calling the library’s main desk.

Methodist church tag sale in Mystic

The Mystic United Methodist Church is having a tag and bake sale at 23 Willow St., Mystic, on Friday, Sept. 27 from 5 to 7 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 28 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

YMCA Garden Club sale Sept. 26

The YMCA Garden Club’s annual plant, treasure, and bake sale will be held at the Westerly-Pawcatuck Branch YMCA on Sept. 26 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Senior center makes October into a fun time

Several programs are on tap via the Lymes’ Senior Center in October.

The Rogers Lake Clubhouse has an 8:30 a.m. Tai Chi class on Oct. 7. There will also be yoga, fitness, zumba, painting, tap dance, exercise, and strength classes throughout the month.

Other highlights include a 2025 Medicare Changes Seminar at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 8, at Old Lyme Town Hall; a Veterans Coffeehouse at Saint Ann’s Church in Old Lyme on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 9:45 a.m.; a “Building Buzz” meeting at the Old Lyme Town Hall on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 11:15 a.m., and a “thank you” note program at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Old Lyme Town Hall.

Two hikes are planned, including a Banningwood Preserve walk in Lyme (meet at parking lot on 19 Town St.) at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, and a Griswold Point amble at 11 Seaside Lane, Old Lyme, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, at 10 a.m.

A Place at the Table fundraiser Sept. 28

the New London Community Meal Center will hold a Place at the Table fundraiser at Blue Gene’s Pub at the Eugene O’Neil Theater Center in Waterford from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28.

Live music from The Rivergods and Burden of Proof will be included. Enter the Picnic Contest and decorate your harvest picnic space.

Stonington Republicans hold fundraiser

The Stonington Republican Town Committee is holding its third annual Boots, Barrels, and BBQ. The event will take place at Saltwater Farm Vineyard on Oct. 7. at 6 p.m. There will be a buffet dinner, live band, and a basket raffle. The event is $50 per person. The Chicago Total Access at Groton Elks

The Chicago Total Access tribute band is coming to Groton Elks. Tickets are $25 per person and will be available at Par 4 and Johnson’s Hardware, the event will be on Sept. 28, rain date is Sept. 29. Groton Elks is raising money for lodge charities, Special Olympics, veterans, and the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.

Night sky observation Sept. 25 in Groton

The astronomy class of UConn at Avery Point in conjunction with the Thames Amateur Astronomical Society invite people to a night sky observation session Wednesday, Sept. 25, at 8 p.m. on the southwest corner of the lawn of the campus.

Come see Saturn rings while you still can. In March 2025, Saturn’s majestic rings will become virtually invisible to earth-based observers, due to the tilt of Saturn’s axis, which will position the rings edge-on to our line of sight.
