Maple Leafs win 5-4 against Blues with Nylander’s OT goal

ST. LOUIS (AP) — William Nylander scored in overtime for Toronto after teammate TJ Brodie missed a penalty shot earlier in the extra session, and the Maple Leafs beat the St. Louis Blues 5-4 on Tuesday night.

Toronto’s Justin Holl, Alexander Kerfoot and Calle Jarnkrok also scored, while John Tavares and Ilya Samsonov each made 30 saves. The Leafs won their third straight win to improve to 10-2-1 in December.

Jordan Kyrou, Calle Rosen, Ryan O’Reilly and Justin Faulk scored for the Blues.

St. Louis lost its third straight game after losing four consecutively to Jordan Binnington, who allowed five goals on 37 shots.

After forcing Vladimir Tarasenko in the Leafs’ zone to turn the puck over, Nylander scored his 21st season goal on a breakaway. Nylander has now scored a point in five consecutive games, with four goals and three assists.

Brodie was given a penalty shot 1:14 into overtime after Kyrou tripped him. Binnington, however, got his right pad onto the puck to maintain the 4-4 tie.

Kyrou tied the game at 4:all with his 17th goal of season, which was the team’s leading goal. This occurred 5:13 into third period. Kyrou, who has been back after missing two games because of an upper-body injury and now has seven goals, three assists, and four goals in his last four games.

Jarnkrok scored from just behind the goal line to give Toronto a 4-3 lead with 4:44 remaining.

Faulk scored on the power play to tie it 3-all at 9:30 in the second period.

O’Reilly scored his 10th of the season 7:39 into the second period to cut the Blues’ deficit to 3-2.

Kerfoot scored a goal in the third period, with Holl receiving a penalty for boarding Robert Thomas. Toronto was now ahead by 3-1.

TRAINER’S ROOM

The Blues placed D Torey Krug on injured reserve with a lower-body injury and said he’ll be reevaluated in six weeks. Krug left the ice in the final seconds of Friday’s shootout loss at Vegas after blocking a shot off his foot. D Tyler Tucker was a healthy scratch, and was recalled by the club.
