Nanjiani tied the knot with wife Emily V. Gordon back in 2007
Kumail Nanjiani is opening up about his proposal to wife Emily V. Gordon.
In a recent episode of The Jennifer Hudson Show, the actor, 45, revealed that he popped the question to his wife of 16 years Gordon, 44, after they were already married.
“We actually went to Chicago for our 16th wedding anniversary ‘cause we met in Chicago,” Nanjiani added. “She heckled me at a comedy show.”
“That doesn’t mean you guys should go heckle comedians,” the actor said as he addressed the audience. “It doesn’t always end up like that. But yeah, we met in Chicago and I actually proposed to her after we got married.”

“It happened because we just had a very grown up conversation, decided to get married and we went and stood in line at City Hall and there was actually a wonderful judge who married us,” he continued.
Nanjiani explained that the judge “probably married 40 people that day but still it felt special marrying us, it really did.”
“And you’re in line and there’s all kinds of people there – older people, there are pregnant people – and it’s really lovely and you talk to everybody,” the comedian said. “And you stand in line for a few hours, we got married and it was really beautiful.”

He went on to explain that a couple years later, Gordon revealed that she wished she had “gotten proposed to properly.”
So Nanjiani began planning.
“A few years later we were in Montauk. We’d gotten like a really small hotel room on the beach and at midnight we were playing video games,” Nanjiani added. “I was like, ‘Hey come outside with me on the beach.’”
Nanjiani then popped the question to his wife, stating that the best way to do a surprise proposal is to “do it three years after you’re married.”
The Big Sick actor went on to say that when they first got married they got $25 rings at Walmart so the next time he proposed he got her a “nicer” ring.
