Jay Leno: Letterman ‘found me on Facebook’

Jay Leno says that despite any lingering bad blood between himself and his soon-to-be (again) late-night rival David Letterman, “a good joke is a good joke.”

And that, in a nutshell, is why he agreed to tape the now-famous Super Bowl promo for “The Late Show” with Letterman and Oprah Winfrey.

“Letterman and I hadn’t seen each other in 18 years. We’d lost touch,” Leno said in his opening monologue on Monday’s (Feb. 8) “Jay Leno Show.” “He found me on Facebook. He made a friend request, I accepted. … Things are going so well between us, we’re going to go to the Vancouver Olympics and compete in the two-man luge.”

Post-monologue, Leno repeated the story about how Letterman came up with the idea for the promo, the secret flights Winfrey and Leno took to New York and the brief taping. He also says things were cordial between him and Letterman.

“When he told me [the idea] — no matter what animosity there is, among comedians, a good joke is a good joke. It makes all [the hostility] go away. …

“I see Dave, we shake hands, and … it was great to see my old friend again. We talked about the old days; it was really good to see him.”

A clip from the monologue is below.
